What’s New? In our last issue, we introduced some new FLASH contributors. This time, we’d like to feature several interesting articles from our returning contributors. Melanie Horn Mallers, Cal State Fullerton tackles a difficult subject, Child Abuse. By creating a dialogue, recognizing the elements of attribution theory and training parents, she offers hope in halting the vicious cycle. Roger Gerard, Shasta College, takes a look at the recession and specifically at cutbacks in hospitality. The golden rule for hotels and restaurants...never cut back on service. Dana Wu Wassmer, Cosumnes River College, starts off the new semester with a look at Macrobiotic Diets...if it's good enough for Gwynth Paltrow and Madonna, what are we missing out on? Perhaps some essential vitamins?.
FCS Goes Green
The federal government is pinning their hopes on the green economy by sending millions of dollars in that direction. A lot of the federal job money is going toward clean energy sources and training programs to make things “green”. Green jobs are popping up everywhere in a variety of fields, including those in the FCS career cluster. Since we learn by doing, one of the first things our students can do to learn more about green, is to begin practicing more energy efficient living as they consider how green will affect their job and career opportunities. The movie “No Impact Man”, released on September 11, is a great place to begin our series because it gets us thinking about what we can DO…a great active learning assignment.
Try
this:
Ask
some questions.
What does "green" mean to you?
How do you live "green"?
View
this 3-minute video, No Impact Man, to see green in the extreme.
What are some of the problems Colin faced?
What were a couple of the benefits he experienced?
Distribute
Going Green and divide students into groups of 3-5 to complete the activity.
Share
ideas and discuss responses.
Discuss
how students can take advantage of green opportunities and
prosper in the green economy.
