FCS News!
It's not too late to register for two terrific FCS Professional Development Events planned especially for you. See highlighted events above. Jean Tepperman looks closely at the Strengthening Families Through Early Care and Education project from the Center for the Study of Social Policy. She provides helpful guidelines for CD/ECE professionals and insight on the program’s potential in California. Maria Claver, Cal State Long Beach, writes about fostering the development of professional identity in gerontology students with wonderful ideas on engaging students in the process. Melanie Horn Mallers, Cal State Fullerton, tackles a tough topic, the effects of divorce on children. The research is divided, but it can be a time for healthy transitions. Just in time for Halloween, Dana Wu Wassmer, Cosumnes River College, weighs in on in on how unhealthy Halloween treats can be. Don’t be fooled by the fun-size and snack-size treats, it's downright scary how those calories can add up.

What Does Green Mean? A Green Crossword
Whether your FCS discipline works with youth or a graying population, designs interiors or fashion, helps people travel, dine, make nutritious meals, or live more effective lives, we are operating in and preparing students for a world that’s going green. Regardless of your discipline, students need to know more about green and how it might impact their careers.

Fortunately, students are clamoring to learn about green. With the depressed job market, they are looking to prepare for an expected wave of green-collar jobs. Students at all levels and in all majors, want to combine environmental concerns with their education and training to prepare for the changes ahead.

As the green wave continues to build in California and across the nation, we need to have a clear understanding of just what green means. Have some fun with your class by getting them going with this Green Crossword puzzle. It will help you figure out how savvy your students are about green and give you an opportunity to discuss and encourage students to take advantage of new possibilities.

 Try This:

 √   Ask
students about what green means to them.
What comes to mind when you think about green careers or green collar jobs?
What kind of green jobs might interest you?
Why do you believe green jobs are or are not critical to our future?

Explain that to understand and converse about the green economy, it is important to speak green.
Distribute the Green Crossword and have students work individually, in teams, or as a class to complete the short puzzle.
   (Puzzle answers above).
Discuss the implications of green to your discipline and the opportunities available to today’s students.
Working as a class, list the innovative ideas and new job prospects in the green economy.

FYI: The Environmental Defense Fund has created a Google Map of the state with the location of more than 2,200 green companies.
