If your students want to earn a degree, gain a promotion at work, or start a new business, it will help them to understand that it takes hard-work and persistence over a prolonged period of time to succeed. In his latest book, Outliers: The Story of Success, author Malcolm Gladwell drives this point home. In fact, Gladwell’s research comes up with the magic number of 10,000 hours as the average number of hours violinists as well as athletes, composers, writers, artists, even criminals spent to achieve their success. Gladwell contends that it takes thousands of hours to develop and perfect one’s skills and unfortunately, there are not many shortcuts on that road to success. With the end of semester fast approaching, and the cuts in the summer schedule, it is a great time to discuss how students can build their skills via internships, volunteer opportunities in your community, and on-the-job training options. Exposing your students to Gladwell’s ideas and research will encourage them to find the best ways to build their skills via practice and experience.

Try this:

Ask questions and record student responses:

What does it take to become a successful fashion designer/chef/interior designer… (your discipline)?

What is an outlier? (Someone or something unusual or extraordinary-above and beyond the norm.)

Whom do you know or know of that you would consider to be an outlier? (Lamar Odom, Einstein, Beethoven, Bill Clinton)

View a short video as Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers: The Story of Success, explains the term.

Review some of the things Gladwell discussed.

Why does Gladwell say it takes a village? (People need help and support to be successful.)

What is the 10,000 hour rule? (It takes an average of 10,000 hours or 10 years to reach extraordinary skill.)

Distribute the One-Sentence Message activity, review the instructions, and give students time to work independently or collaboratively to complete the activity.

Discuss the one-sentence message and students’ responses to it:It takes thousands of hours to become an overnight success.

FYI: Practice isn't the thing you do once you're good. It's the thing that makes you good. Malcolm Gladwell
