FCS Helpful Hints
In his latest contribution, Roger Gerard, Shasta College, tackles the “ Fear of Flying ”. He provides insight and some helpful resources to better understand and overcome the fear. In addition, to help us in these lean economic times, Dana Wu Wassmer, Cosumnes River College, offers a variety of ideas and techniques for us to eat cheaply, but still eat well .

FCS FLASH Activity: Sleep Well, To Think Well
During sleep, our brain — the organ that directs us to sleep — is itself extraordinarily active, and much of that activity helps the brain to learn, remember, and make connections. Many of our students underestimate the importance of getting a good night’s sleep and often study late into the night. Students may be unaware of the fact that sleep deprivation can have detrimental effects on their academic performance and cause them serious problems. They may be so used to being consistently sleepy that they don’t realize their lack of sleep is unhealthy or abnormal. As we head into finals, take some time to discuss the information researchers are learning about the importance of sleeping. Help students understand -- they need to sleep well to think well .

Try this:

Ask students questions about how well they sleep.
How many people got 8 hours of sleep last night?
About how many hours do you sleep?
Why do you think sleeping helps you to learn?
View this Sleep Well, Think Well video clip, about 2 minutes.
Discuss the key points of the video ...
      What is off-line processing?
What happens if sleep is disrupted?
How does sleep help you learn?
Distribute the Sleep IQ Quiz . (Print one copy for each student.)
Review the answers to Sleep IQ Quiz . (Just need one copy for you.)
Share how students will use this information.

FYI: Approximately 47 million American adults -- almost a quarter of the population -- does not get enough sleep (approximately 8 hours per night).
